What is a MIME type?<\/strong> –\u00a0MIME stands for “Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It’s a way of identifying files on the Internet according to their nature and format. For example, using the “Content-type” header value defined in a HTTP response, the browser can open the file with the proper extension\/plugin.<\/p>\n

Wikipedia<\/strong> – An\u00a0Internet media type<\/b>[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0is a two-part identifier for\u00a0file formats<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Internet<\/a>. The identifiers were originally defined in\u00a0RFC 2046<\/a>\u00a0for use in email sent through\u00a0SMTP<\/a>, but their use has expanded to other protocols such as\u00a0HTTP<\/a>,\u00a0RTP<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0SIP<\/a>. These types were called\u00a0MIME types<\/b>, and are sometimes referred to as\u00a0Content-types<\/b>, after the name of a header in several protocols whose value is such a type. The original name\u00a0MIME type<\/b>\u00a0referred to usage to identify non-ASCII parts of email messages composed using the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) specification.
